In a humid environment, water penetrates the hair shaft and is absorbed into the cortex, causing the proteins there to swell. The hair essentially doubles back in on itself at a molecular level, absorbing water, forming bonds and swelling until it disrupts the cuticle (the smooth, outermost layer of the hair). The cuticle layer raises, leaving hair to appear dry and frizzy instead of smooth and defined. The silicones in synthetic hair products also contribute to the debilitation of the hair cuticle, stripping the hair of its natural oils.
Dry and dehydrated hair, especially chemically and color-treated hair, is very susceptible to this reaction. The key to keeping hair cuticles smooth is making sure your hair is hydrated not with water, but with oil. As water and oil repel each other, oil’s presence in the hair will counteract humidity from penetrating into the hair shaft, in turn preventing frizz!
